The Bicton Belle – Simplicity At Its Best

Hi Everyone,

I love old boats which means I absolutely love this landscape photograph!    This photo has been sitting on my computer for about six months and I’d done nothing with it until today.  Finally I had a few ideas for this photo and I thought it turned out really well.    Firstly, the camera settings were F22, iso 100, 1sec shutter speed.   The lens was a Canon 24-70mm F2.8 lens and my camera is a 1DsMkIII.   I choose F22 as I wanted to make sure everything was super sharp.

Obviously, I’ve done some Photoshopping on this photograph, I increased the contrast of the photo using Curves, then I desaturated the photograph by about 60%.   After that I returned the boat to its original colour which made it stand out from everything else, because everything else is desaturated your eyes fall onto the boat first.   Next I sharpened  the image using the Smart Sharpen tool.   The last step I took was to apply a vignette to the photo to further draw people’s attention to the boat.  As you can see only a few simple steps in Photoshop really boosted this photo.

This technique is discussed in Scott Kelby’s Photoshop books you should check them out as they are fantastic resources and its where I learnt this technique.

Thanks for viewing this post everyone,

Jamie Paterson
